Shakti Mudra

Shakti Mudra

     In Sanskrit, Shakti means "power" or "empowerment" and Mudra means "gesture." Shakti is also the name of a goddess in Hinduism and is said that she helps to restore balance or Dharma. This practice is a Samyukta meaning “double” Hasta Mudra, where both hands are required to preform this practice.

     This practice is often used in Ayurveda Which is a sister science to Yoga and is a form of medicine practiced in India. This practice is preformed to aid the immune system as well as to regulate sleeping patterns and is preformed during Yoga practices to produce calming effects on the mind and body. 

     This relaxing practice is often seen as a feminine or sensual Hasta Mudra because of the effects on the pelvic area of the body.

Practice

  • Sit in a Meditative Asana or a comfortable seated position, this gesture can also be preformed during a Pranayama practice.

  • Rub both palms together to activate the palms.
  • Fold the thumbs of the right and left hands in the palms.

  • Wrap the index and middle fingers around the thumbs.

  • Bring the right and left tips of the pinky and ring fingers together.

  • Bring the hands to Svadhisthana Chakra located about two inches below the belly button.



  • Duration

  • Practice for at least 15 minutes daily.

  • Hasta Mudras can be practiced for up to 45 minutes daily.
  • The best times for practice are between the hours of 2 a.m. - 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

  • Helps to regulate sleeping patterns after regular practice as well as issues with insomnia.
  • Relaxes the pelvis area, helping with menstrual cramps, spasms and any other issue in that region of the body.
